Over 1,000 petition signatures to New York Times

This is all that remains at 6442 Marshall Foch Street in the Lakeview neighborhood of New Orleans.

You did it. Over 1,000 supporters of Levees.org signed a petition to the New York Times requesting a style memo.

In under 72 hours, over 1,000 engaged people took action and signed a petition requesting that whenever the 2005 flooding in metropolitan New Orleans is referenced, that it be called a manmade disaster, not a natural disaster.

Such an outpouring of support was likely spurred by the New York Times’ recent defense (to a reader) of calling Katrina a ‘natural disaster.’

“I think all the families who were displaced and who lost loved ones would agree that a hurricane did exist,” said Greg Brock, senior editor of standards.

I used to live on the MS gulf coast, pre-Katrina. I am a land surveyor and have studied the practices of the U.S.C.O.E. While you’re video was “entertaining”, you did not go into why the levees failed. You did not share that the levees were poorly conceived and constructed, have been failing for years, that the failures caused the undercutting of them, and the the levee board has been squandering money instead of making repairs. The original Mississippi River levee system was constructed out of materials other than just dirt. The scouring effects of the river always undermine dirt levees. Through subsequent “repairs”, the levees lost their man-made sub-structures. Also, the COE has made gross errors in the contruction of seawalls that have helped to destroy wetlands that would have slowed the storm surge. The walls help erode natural shores that cannot maintain themselves in the back surf created by the walls. I might be willing to aid your organization, if you present all of the facts in a concise manner. It will take more historical research than just the past twenty years.

    Dear Mr. Langen,

To which video are you referring? Levees.org has created over 20 videos.

And though there are mountains of well documented evidence that the USACE has badly designed and built levees in greater New Orleans, we know of no well documented evidence that any of the levee failures were due to lack of repairs.

Yes, the original Mississippi River levees are T-walls and very good construction.

For a more indepth description of the levee failures please see FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS on the our homepage.

And thank you for your offer to aid our organization. I look forward to hearing from you.
