Right now, the American Planning Association is holding a 4-day National Planning Conference in New Orleans.
Part of the experience was a tour of the Gentilly area of New Orleans traditionally diverse, largely post-war neighborhood that suffered extensive flood damage from the London Avenue Canal levee failures.
The group of fifty explored the post-Flood redevelopment of Gentilly, which provides a model for disaster recovery and community development driven by local government support of housing development, commercial revitalization, and vacant land stewardship.
Seth Knudsen with the New Orleans Redevelopment Authority (NORA) included the Levee Exhibit Hall and Garden as one of the “vacant land stewardship” projects.
