Levees.org and Council Vice President Fielkow to announce breach sites’ National Register Status

The Louisiana Office of Historic Preservation is located in the Lieutenant Governor's Office in Baton Rouge

Levees.org and New Orleans City Council Vice President Arnie Fielkow will hold a press conference to announce several updates regarding Levees.org’s nomination of two major levee breach sites – the 17th Street Canal and the Industrial Canal (east side north) – to the prestigious National Register of Historic Places.

Also confirmed to attend are Scott Hutcheson, Advisor in Cultural Economy to the Mayor of New Orleans (who will speak on behalf of the Mayor); City Councilmember Jon Johnson for District E; and Charles Allen III, director of the New Orleans Office of Coastal and Environmental Affairs.

Levees.org Unveils Second Historic Plaque at London Avenue Canal Breach Site

Irvin Mayfield Jr plays "A closer walk with thee" on the Elysian Trumpet in Gentilly New Orleans.

On Friday May 20, 2011, Levees.org and Irvin Mayfield Jr hosted an Unveiling Ceremony for a Louisiana State Historic Plaque near ground zero of the London Avenue Canal breach site.

Over 100 residents attended the event held at the corner of Mirabeau Avenue and Warrington Drive in the Gentilly neighborhood of New Orleans.

Irvin Mayfield Jr. played the first song he ever learned, “A Closer Walk with Thee” on the Elysian trumpet, hand-built by David Monette, the modern master of trumpet design, and dedicated to the memory of Irvin Mayfield, Sr. and all of the victims of the flooding on August 29, 2005.

The event closed with the release of two doves by Big Chief Clarence Dalcour of the Tribe Creole Osceola.

While the Historic Plaque is Levees.org’s gift to the people of Gentilly, the text was crafted and the location was chosen in collaboration with the neighborhood association leaders and affected residents.

Levees.org supporters paid for the Plaque which cost $1740. Mr. Mayfield offered a contribution of $1000 toward to the Plaque.

Preparations underway for Historic Plaque Unveiling at Levee Breach site in New Orleans

Members of the Gentilly community place the 104 pound plaque onto the post near ground zero of the London Avenue Canal levee breach site

At 5:30pm yesterday, members of the Gentilly neighborhood community hoisted a Historic Plaque onto its post near the breach site of the London Avenue Canal (east side).

Assisting with the placement was Nick Harris, Sr, Assistant VP at Dillard University- Community Development Corporation, Reverend Lionel Davis, Sr, Liaison, Pilotland & Chaplain, Filmore Gardens Neighborhood Assoc, Oji Alexander, Project Assistant, Project Home Again.

After the Plaque was set in place, it was covered in preparation for a Formal Unveiling. Please join us on Friday May 20 at 6pm when Levees.org and Irvin Mayfield Jr. and others unveil the Louisiana State Historic Plaque for everyone to see.

Soon, we will be commemorating a historic event that people all over the world saw on TV.
