NEWS: Delta collapse would cost billions

According to Valley Water News, annual issue 2007, for the Santa Clara Valley Water District:

A network of aging and eroding levees, subsiding islands, climagte change, wastewater discharge, toxics, mounting regulatory uncertainties, and a struggling ecosystem plague the Delta. Studies predict a 60 percent chance that an earthquake in the Delta region over the next few decades could cause a possible Katrina-like collapse of miles of levees. This could halt water supply deliveries through the Delta for a year or more, resulting in an estimated $40 billion loss to the state’s economy.
The water district uses imported water to supply our treatment plants as well as replenish and stabilize our groundwater basins, which were over-drafted in the early 1900s and caused land subsidence.

The governor-initiated “Delta Vision” process is currently under way and major Delta decisions are expected to be made in 2008. A cabinet-level committee will make a recommendation to the governor in October 2008. The legislature will also weigh in on the policy. Finally, there could be a bond measure on the ballot in 2008 to provide funding to advance a comprehensive Delta solution and infrastructure investment program.

PersOp: IMAX Hurricane on the Bayou

“Shot before and after the unprecedented devastation of Hurricane Katrina and featuring state of the art CGI special effects depicting the height of the storm’s fury, HURRICANE ON THE BAYOU brings into focus the startling loss of Louisiana’s rapidly disappearing coastal wetlands that are New Orleans’ first line of defense against storms.”

In December, I finally had a chance to see this IMAX movie at The Tech Museum in San Jose. I had heard about this film for many months, and had put this on my list of “must see” movies. If you’re from New Orleans or just love New Orleans, make plans to see this! Be prepared for a variety of emotions and feelings that may come up for you. You’re sure to enjoy the visuals and the fiddle playing, if nothing else.

Controversial levee video re-posted to YouTube

Today, Levees.Org showed the citizens of New Orleans and the whole nation that the ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) shall not bully and shall not intimidate a fledgling non-profit and a bunch of high school kids out of exercising their First Amendment rights!

Today, at a press conference in the Lakeview neighborhood in New Orleans, in the face of threatened legal action, Levees.Org rejected a demand by the ASCE to cease and desist and returned its controversial levee video to YouTube for public viewing.
