Sign installation begins for Historic Plaque in Lower Ninth Ward

After more than a year of partnership and preparation, work has begun on installing a historic plaque at the breach site of the Industrial Canal.

The pole, installed in a cement block on city property, marks where a historic plaque will be unveiled on Monday August 24 at 6:00 p.m.

An unveiling event will mark the 10th anniversary of the worst civil engineering disaster in the history of the United States.

On August 29, 2005, federal levees designed and built by the Army Corps of Engineers failed during Hurricane Katrina.

The unveiling ceremony will take place at the T-intersection of Jourdan Avenue and N. Johnson Street, New Orleans.

For the past ten years, there has been nothing at the site to commemorate the breach event.

Neighbors share in upkeep of Levee Exhibit Hall’s garden

Busloads of visitors from all over the world come every day to the newly opened Levee Exhibit Hall and Garden.

They come to see and touch the site of the London Avenue Canal levee breach. They come to learn how it affected the neighborhood.

They come to learn about all the breaches, all the neighborhoods, all the lives.

They often ask, “How do the neighboring homeowners feel about tour busses rolling through every day.” This is the answer:

“The neighbors love to see people interested in their story. The neighbors are also very engaged in the park upkeep. Mardi Gras Indian Big Chief Laugand comes out on Sunday with his kids to water the plants. Kenneth Evans waters on Tuesday and Sidney St. Martin on Thursday.”
