Why the Corps of Engineers needs to be monitored

In the busy weeks during the Fifth Anniversary of the Worst Civil Engineering Disaster in U.S. History, we somehow missed this excellent sum-up of why we need to be watching the Army Corps of Engineers very carefully.

This post written by a local engineer in New Orleans begins with the words: “In the five years since the worst failure in the history American Civil Engineering, we’ve had to keep up with the Corps….” The post ends with this: “From all this, I hope everyone sees how important it is to keep an eye on the Corps. Oversight is incredibly important….”

Everything in-between is very interesting detailed information very clearly presented on five different aspects of the flood protection.

1. Design / Build
2. Resiliency / Backup
3. Geotechnical Analysis
4. B 31.3 Calculations
5. 100 vs. 1000 Year Protection

Please check out this very enlightening and important blog post.

But through patient education and persistence, we are showing America that New Orleans and St. Bernard Parish are exactly where they belong.

We do it with public service announcements, historic plaques, authoring federal legislation, informational eblasts, education campaigns using YouTube, Facebook and Twitter, speaking engagements and youth education to name only a few.

How do we know we’re winning? Here’s some recent signs and indications.
