The First Ten at New Orleans Times Picayune

The slab and front steps are all that remain of this home in the lower Ninth Ward neighborhood of New Orleans.

Today Levees.org awarded its tenth “Seal of Approval” to a New Orleans Times Picayune reporter.

Levees.org awards a Seal of Approval (SOA) whenever reporters accurately describe the 2005 flooding in metro New Orleans. We believe in journalists and the media, and so we work very hard to help them understand the true root cause of the flooding.

Today, Molly Reid received a SOA for her description in her article about the Duplantier Volunteer Pavillion in City Park.

In describing the flooding she wrote:

“It was volunteer labor that had played a vital role in bringing the garden back to life after 90 percent of the greenery was destroyed by floodwaters from the 2005 levee breaches after Hurricane Katrina.”

Ms. Reid resisted using ‘Katrina shorthand’ or simply blaming a natural disaster for the flooding therefore ignoring that civil engineers and levee failure are the primary cause.

A major city went underwater and we are glad Ms. Reid uses a few extra words and is thus more accurate.

Ms. Reid is the tenth recipient of the Levees.org SOA since we began the program seven months ago. She joins a list that also includes Gwen Filosa, Bill Barrow, Judy Walker, Brett Anderson, John Pope, Doug McCash, Bob Warren, Dave Walker and Keith Spera.

Pennsylvania high school student holds fundraiser for Levees.org

Lilli Geltman of Wayne, Pennsylvania

Everyone has the power to make a difference.

A great example is Lilli Geltman a Pennsylvania high school student who – entirely on her own – organized and held a fundraiser for Levees.org as an ‘application’ for her Senior Class Project.

In addition to raising awareness about the metro New Orleans levee failures, Miss Lilli Geltman and her friends had a grand time and raised $300.00!

“My mother and I made red beans and rice, Momma Reus’ Voodoo Brew and ordered pralines from Aunt Sally’s in the French Quarter,” wrote Ms. Geltman in a letter she included with her check. “My high school jazz band also performed jazz music, inspired by New Orleans, and the entire night was a success!”

Lilli told me her goal was to show her classmates ‘another place’ and to ‘share the culture and preserve a great place.’

This story is inspirational and a great example of how each of us – in our own unique way – has the power to help metro New Orleans recover.

At this writing I spoke to Lilli’s aunt who lives in New Orleans who told me she presented her class project just two days ago and it went well!

And we wish you well, too, Lilli.

EXCLUSIVE: Levees.org interviews Dr. Bob Bea on the BP oil disaster

Professor Robert Bea, University of California Berkeley

Robert Bea recently leaked important information to the press regarding the BP oil disaster.

In an exclusive interview, we asked Dr. Bea about his motivation for contacting the press with this information.

DR. BEA: Likely starting next week, congressional hearings will begin. President Obama will likely appoint a Commission. Tomorrow at 3pm, I have a conference call with Henry Waxman, Chief of Staff. If someone doesn’t mobilize people to bring out the very best information, it will soon be covered up by corporate political wrangling. I don’t want that to happen again.

LEVEES.ORG: Are you referring to what happened after the US Army Corps of Engineers levees failed during Katrina on August 29, 2005?

DR. BEA: Yes. The 8/29 Investigation never happened. I don’t want to see another failure to get to the truth. I hope that others including the rig operators will stand up and be heard now. The key word is NOW. With these commissions unfolding. We need the best information now.

LEVEES.ORG: What do you mean by corporate political wrangling?

DR. BEA: We can expect the politicians to do what they do. They are not bad people, but they do what they do. So right now we need to bring forward good information, truth and facts. So that people can see the information and hopefully learn from it.

Dr. Bea is an adviser to Levees.org.
