Gwen Filosa gains our Seal of Approval for accurate reporting

Levees.org routinely recognizes reporters who carefully describe what caused greater New Orleans to flood during Katrina.

Considering that a major American city went under water, we find the few extra words worth the effort.

So today, Times Picayune reporter Gwen Filosa again receives our Seal of Approval for continuing to refrain from using inaccurate and harmful ‘Katrina shorthand.’

In an article today, Ms. Filosa described the flooding five years ago as caused by ‘Katrina and the levee failures.’ Getting the story right begins here in New Orleans. Eventually NYT, WashPo and others will figure it out.

As noted by John McQuaid, former political reporter for the TP, using Katrina shorthand is dangerous “with its underlying associations of “natural disaster swamps city below sea level – what the heck are those people doing living down there?”

We add that i
t’s dangerous because the majority of the American people lives in counties protected by levees.

McQuaid recently chided two bloggers for ignoring the civil engineering component of the flood.

“It’s just wrong to say Katrina would have been an immense disaster no matter what.” — John McQuaid in True/Slant.

It also protects the human beings responsible, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

NRDC interviews Harry Shearer

Daniel Hinerfeld with the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) recently interviewed Harry Shearer on several issues, including his new documentary The Big Uneasy.

In the short interview, Mr. Hinerfeld asks some great questions, and Mr. Shearer, like the pro that he is, makes some great points. Here’s an excerpt:

HINERFELD: “So you’ve got a new movie. Can you say what it’s called and what it’s about?”

SHEARER: “It’s called The Big Uneasy. After five years I despaired of the national news media acknowledging the story of why New Orleans flooded in 2005, which had been meticulously investigated and documented by two independent teams of engineers and other scientists which came the conclusion –in the words of one of the engineers – that this one of the greatest engineering catastrophies since Chernobyl. Chernobyl’s the big leagues. So New Orleanians had known a lot of this stuff because the findings of the investigators were piecemeal coming out in the local press, but the national media had formed their template of the story – big storm, city below sea level….”

Everybody’s talking about Levees.org’s most recent interview

Greater New Orleans Anchor Tom Bagwill interviews Levees.org founder Sandy Rosenthal

Everyone is talking my responses in a recent TV interview by Greater New Orleans Anchor Tom Bagwill.

Yesterday, someone who I’ve never met approached me, and after raving about the show told me, “It explained so many things I didn’t know before!”

So our advisors urged us to bring the short interview to the attention of all the supporters. It’s a great recap of what Levees.org has accomplished and what remains to be done.

OTHER NEWS: Last week, the founder of Levees.org was also invited to record a fundraising message for WWNO Radio, the local NPR affiliate station in New Orleans.

These two invitations, one from the producers of WWNO and one from the Greater New Orleans show are evidence that the ongoing efforts of Levees.org supporters is paying off.
