NY Times calls both BP spill and Katrina ‘natural disasters’

Flood damaged home in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana (Jan 2006)

Levees.org believes in the media, and that is why we try so hard to work with reporters and help them get the story right about the metro New Orleans flooding.

But after four and a half years, it seems the New York Times – the paper with the third highest subscription rate in America – does not appear to care about telling the story accurately.

A few days ago, in a letter to a freelance reporter, senior editor Greg Brock with the New York Times defended an NYT reporter’s general description of the 2005 flooding as a ‘natural disaster.’

Such a simplification is inaccurate. Metro New Orleans was flooded by levee and floodwall failure, due to shoddy engineering, a Man-made Disaster not a ‘Natural Disaster.’

But here’s the shocker. Mr. Brock closed his letter with this:

“I think all the families who were displaced and who lost loved ones would agree that a hurricane did exist.”

Feeling that those very people deserve a chance to respond to Brock’s assumption, Levees.org has called upon its nearly 25,000 supporters and invited them to contact the New York Times.

Mitch Landrieu and Levees.org

Mayor elect Mitch Landrieu at Jazz Fest April 30, 2010

After carefully reading the transcript of Mayor Mitch Landrieu’s inauguration speech, we note a few things.

Our new mayor utilized sound messaging regarding the flooding of metro New Orleans in 2005.

We will hold them and everyone else to their responsibilities to protect, clean up and rebuild our coast. To rebuild our houses. To repair the damage done when the levees broke. –Mayor Mitch Landrieu

He used the word ‘Katrina’ only once and it was in reference to a point in time, not a reference to the terrible flooding.

It would appear that Mayor Landrieu has heard from Levees.org, agrees and intends to incorporate our mission into his.

Time will tell.

INTERVIEW: Aaron Viles of Gulf Restoration Network on BP Oilspill

Aaron Viles of Gulf Restoration Network

We interviewed Aaron Viles this morning on the catastrophic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Top of the news has been the massive oil spill heading toward Louisiana’s ecologically rich wetlands as storms threaten to interfere with protection efforts.

Mr. Viles, Campaign Director for Gulf Restoration Network believes responsibility should not be placed with the federal government.

“Responsibility for this crisis belongs with British Petroleum,” said Mr. Viles. “The law is clear.”

He maintains that the resources and assistance of the federal government are needed to deal with this crisis. However, he believes that U.S. taxpayers should not be burdened with paying for it. BP should reimburse the US government.
