Pentagon only partly investigated Senator Landrieu’s concerns

In a stunning show of apparent bureaucratic ineptitude, or perhaps tacit collusion, the Inspector General of the Department of Defense (DOD) ignored US Senator Mary Landrieu’s call for a federal investigation into alleged wrongdoing by the US Army Corps of Engineers and instead focused only on Levees.org, one of the whistleblowers.

The Pentagon concluded that no action is necessary after Senator Landrieu called for an investigation into credible claims the Army Corps waged a strategic deception campaign to protect its image after its levees failed during Hurricane Katrina.

Senator Landrieu requested the investigation after Jon Donley, the founder and former editor in chief of NOLA.com, the online version of the New Orleans Times Picayune issued a 3-page sworn affidavit detailing how the Army Corps had waged a disinformation campaign after Katrina to obscure the facts of the flooding and rewrite history.

The Pentagon apparently limited the scope of the investigation strictly to two individuals who left ugly comments on Levees.org’s NOLA.com blog and therefore did not address the complaints raised by Donley.

The Pentagon has unfortunately demonstrated what happens when an investigation of wrong doing is a self-study. The letter details only what was done relating to two individuals which represents a tiny fraction of the total activity. The only thing noteworthy about comments left on Levees.org’s blog is that was how Levees.org discovered the activity and opened Pandora’s box.

Bottom line: The Pentagon’s response is merely cosmetic and proves Levees.org was correct in feeling the DOD was not the best choice for an investigation. We anticipate that Senator Landrieu will agree and will call on the Justice Department for a full and proper investigation.

Pentagon says “no further action needed” on Corps Internet Scandal in New Orleans

The Pentagon’s Inspector General office has issued a response to Senator Mary Landrieu’s recent request for a federal investigation.  In August, Senator Landrieu asked that the Army look into allegations by the founder and former editor in chief of NOLA.com of an organized campaign by the Corps of Engineers to undercut its critics.

In a letter to Sen Landrieu, Asst. Inspector General John Crane has determined that the Corps of Engineers’ IG took “appropriate actions” and that no further action is needed. Unfortunately, the DOD apparently limited the scope of the investigation strictly to comments posted to Levees.org founder, Sandy Rosenthal’s blog and issued a time line of actions by the US Army Corps and the Department of Defense (DOD) in response only to those comments.

Levees.org maintained from day one that we believed this behavior to be representative of far more than a few disgruntled employees.  The allegations in Jon Donley’s sworn affidavit of a cadre of at least 20 people over a period of at least two years conducting damage control for the Corps were stunning in their detail and clarity, but no one from the IG’s office so much as even called Mr. Donley.

We are highly interested in finding out what Senator Landrieu’s reaction to the IG’s letter is.  In the meantime, you can see the Asst. IG John Crane’s letter here.

Levee failure and flooding is not a New Orleans problem, nor a “sea-level” problem. That’s why Levees.org has satellite chapters in four states besides Louisiana including FL, CA, IL and OR.

And this month, Levees.org launched its sixth chapter: New York.

Its director is Brian Schaffer (New York City) with over 10 years of corporate communications experience. His leadership will help us increase our national presence and outreach. We also appointed Gabrielle Foss to the position of Assistant Director who will aide Schaffer in recruitment of new membership supporters.

Levees.org is also finalizing plans on chapters in both Connecticut and Texas!

You can read more on the New York chapter here.
